Huamin Henry Li, MD, PhD, FAAAAI, FACAAI, is board-certified in allergy and immunology. Huamin Henry Li, MD, PhD, FAAAAI, FACAAI, is board-certified in allergy and immunology. He received his Allergy and Clinical Immunology training from the Johns Hopkins Asthma and Allergy Center in Baltimore, MD. Dr. Li has been a part-time faculty of medicine at the Johns Hopkins Hospital since 2001, after he finished his fellowship training and spent one year in a private allergy clinic before joining IAA. He is a clinical associate professor at the George Washington University Hospital. Dr. Li received his PhD in Medical Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, Texas – where he was awarded the McLaughlin Fellowship Award for excellence in research. Dr. Li has published more than 50 papers in allergy and immunology peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, and has participated in more than 100 clinical trials as a principal investigator. Dr. Li received his medical degree in 1988. He is also an active member of many other medical societies. He has extensive experience in treating both adult and pediatric angioedema, allergic skin diseases, food or drug allergy, immune disorders, sinusitis, asthma and other allergy conditions. Dr. Li is in charge of the Clinical Laboratory of the IAA. The lab is primarily focused on immunology and allergy diagnostic testing, specifically, flow cytometry for immunophenotyping and basophil activation tests for food allergies. The lab also provides support for HAE diagnosis and research.
Mark Scarupa, MD
Dr. Scarupa is board certified in Allergy and Immunology as well as Internal Medicine. Dr. Scarupa completed his Allergy and Clinical Immunology training at the Johns Hopkins Asthma and Allergy Center in Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. Scarupa is board certified in Allergy and Immunology as well as Internal Medicine. Dr. Scarupa completed his Allergy and Clinical Immunology training at the Johns Hopkins Asthma and Allergy Center in Baltimore, Maryland. Prior to his sub-specialty training, Dr. Scarupa completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the Washington Hospital Center in Washington DC. He completed medical school at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and received a BA in biology from Macalester College.
Dr. Scarupa is a member of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology and the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. He has presented research at major national meetings.
His interests include asthma, rhinitis, urticaria (hives), immunodeficiency and medical education.
Athena Economides, MD

Prior to joining the Institute for Asthma and Allergy (IAA), Dr. Athena Economides held academic appointment at both the University of California, Los Angeles Medical School, and at Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles, where she developed the Food Allergy Center. Her special interests include food allergy and immune deficiencies, and her contributions to medical literature including articles on diagnostics and management of allergic rhinitis, vasomotor rhinitis urticaria, and asthma, especially pediatric asthma. Dr. Athena Economides – a bi-lingual Greek-American – earned a Master’s Degree in Child Development prior to attending medical school in Athens, Greece. During her pediatric residency at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, she was awarded the St. Gem Award (1992) for excellence in research. She then went to complete both a basic science and clinical allergy / immunology fellowship at UCLA. Dr. Economides is committed to providing medical education for physicians. During her brief tenure at Kaiser in Washington DC, she directed a continuing medical education program and currently runs an Allergy-Immunology Journal Club for DC area physicians. She regularly contributes to the training of medical residents both at Georgetown and Washington Hospital Center and lectures widely on such topics as the evaluation of recurrent infections, anaphylaxis, rhinitis, asthma, and sinusitis. An active participant in the professional community, Dr. Athena Economides serves on several committees for the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology. The Consumers Research Council of America voted Dr. Economides as a top pediatrician, and the Washingtonian recognized her as Best Doctor.
Carla Ward, MD
Dr. Carla Ward joined the Institute for Asthma and Allergy in June of 2014. She is board certified in allergy and immunology. A native of the Washington DC and Montgomery County community, she is from Gaithersburg, MD and completed her undergraduate and medical studies at the University of Maryland.

Dr. Carla Ward joined the Institute for Asthma and Allergy in June of 2014. She is board certified in allergy and immunology. A native of the Washington DC and Montgomery County community, she is from Gaithersburg, MD and completed her undergraduate and medical studies at the University of Maryland.
Dr. Ward completed her Internal Medicine residency at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. During this time, as a Clinical Fellow in Internal Medicine at the Harvard Medical School, she developed an interest in the field of Allergy and Immunology.
She completed her fellowship in Allergy and Immunology at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Prior to joining the Institute for Asthma and Allergy, Dr. Ward was in an allergy private practice in Tampa, Florida for eight years. She has published research in academic journals and has presented research at national allergy meetings. David Jeong, MD

Dr. David Jeong is board-certified in Allergy & Immunology. He completed his fellowship in Allergy & Immunology at the University of Washington Medical Center and Seattle Children’s Hospital. After completing his fellowship, he began his career at the Institute for Asthma and Allergy in 2010 where he was involved in clinical care, research, and medical education. He transitioned back to Seattle, WA in 2013 where he became the Department Head of Allergy & Immunology at Virginia Mason Medical Center/Benaroya Research Institute. While in Seattle, he treated patients of all ages but developed a busy practice caring for children with food allergies. Known for compassion and sincerely listening to patients, Dr. Jeong has been named Top Doctor every year by multiple organizations since 2013. He also led a team of research scientists in studying the role of T cells in allergies. He has been the principal investigator for many clinical trials studying various food allergy treatments. Under Dr. Jeong’s leadership, both his clinic and research lab were recognized by Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) as a FARE Center of Distinction. He is also committed to the education of future generations of physicians, having trained medical students, residents, and Allergy & Immunology training fellows in both clinical care and immunology research. Dr. Jeong returned to the Institute for Asthma and Allergy in 2022. He is the Director of The Center for Food Allergy at The Institute for Asthma and Allergy, where patients with food allergies have access to personalized, evidence-based care, cutting edge therapies, and clinical research trials. In addition to those with food allergies, he sees patients with asthma, rhinitis, urticaria, angioedema, drug allergies, chronic sinusitis, eosinophilic esophagitis, insect allergies, and immune deficiencies. He completed his undergraduate degree (BA) at Northwestern University, his medical degree (MD) at the University of Iowa College of Medicine, and his pediatrics residency at the University of Michigan. In his free time, he enjoys golf, tennis, snowboarding, hiking, playing drums, and spending time with his wife and two daughters. He is excited to serve patients in the greater Washington DC area.
